Open Data Science Europe Workshop 2021

Freja Vamborg

Freja is a senior scientist for C3S at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), Freja leads activities that provide the ‘final’ links in the long chain from raw data through to climate information and knowledge. She has a special responsibility for communicating climate information to a wider audience. Freja has been the lead author of the European State of the Climate report since its first edition published in 2018. This annual report, which is part of C3S' climate monitoring activities, provides an analysis of Europe for the past calendar year, with descriptions of climate conditions and events. It also explores the associated fluctuations in key climate variables and indices from across all parts of the Earth system. Further, the ESOTC gives updates on key global climate indicators for Europe and the rest of the world.

The European State of the Climate - from data to information and back
Freja Vamborg

Through its Climate Data Store (CDS), the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) provides access to a wide array of climate data, tools and applications. The annual European State of the Climate (ESOTC) report, which is a key product of C3S’ climate monitoring activities, builds on many of these datasets to provide a snapshot of the climate conditions of the past year for Europe and of long-term trends for the globe, Europe and the polar regions. The latest report, the ESOTC 2020, was released in April 2021 and covers topics, such as the exceptionally warm winter of 2020 in northeastern Europe, a wet to dry transition during early spring - with impacts on river discharge, soil moisture levels and vegetation, as well as a specific focus on Arctic Siberia - the region which saw the largest annual temperature anomalies worldwide during 2020.
This presentation will start by considering the route from the data to the content of the report, then the main focus for the remainder will be on how to cater for those who are specifically interested in the data and analyses behind the report. The goal is to provide a traceable and transparent path from the data to the information, and then back again to the data. The talk will cover what has been put in place so far, which includes a layered approach to the report, with a high-level summary, the full content in a web-based report, an extensive “About the data” section and finally links to the original data and their documentation in the CDS. The talk will further discuss envisioned future evolutions to facilitate the access, use and exploration of the data behind the report, including the development of workflows integrated in the CDS application environment.
